When I was a kid, the phrase "Queenie Bee is coming" was a surefire way to get my attention, as well as that of my neighborhood friends. She was the mascot for the long-defunct burger chain Burger Queen, and there was one right down the street from the house where I grew up.

Burger Queen

That building is still in use as the home of Skillman's Auto Sales, but every time I drive by, I remember Burger Queen, Queenie Bee, and its now-unusual menu.

Burger Queen was unique in that it was a fast-food restaurant that offered not only burgers but also chicken and fish dinners. And a salad bar. Have you ever seen a salad bar in another fast-food place? I haven't. It covered all the bases

Here's a vintage Burger Queen commercial (I had one of those puppets).

Druther's

In 1981, Burger Queen changed its name to Druther's. The name change, however, did not come with an edited menu. Everything stayed the same...on the menu. As for the mascot? Queenie Bee was replaced by creepy Andy Dandytale.

Druther's in Campbellsville, Kentucky

If you're wondering if you can still get a Druther's "Dandy Dinner," or anything at all from Druther's, the answer is yes. The one location left on Earth, in Campbellsville, Kentucky, has, for the most part, maintained the old Druther's menu...burgers, fish, and chicken. The menu is actually pretty loaded, all things considered. And no, they don't call it the Dandy Dinner anymore, but its components (burgers, fries, and a drink) are all on the menu.

If you're ever in Campbellsville, Kentucky, Monday through Saturday between 6 AM and 5 PM, you ought to stop in for old time's sake. If you go on a Sunday, make sure it's between 7 AM and 4 PM.

And if you have an old Queenie Bee ring lying around, you should bring it.
