Love Retro Lids & Superior Streetwear? Owensboro’s Newest Vintage Hidden Gem
I only use the word "hidden" because if you don't know where Owensboro's newest vintage store is, you may miss out. And that would really be unfortunate for you! I've been incorporating vintage clothes into my wardrobe for 20 years now (it hurts to admit that,) and It's awesome that we have several options in town now for folks who want to do the same.
I love to hunt for shirts, hats, accessories at thrift and junk stores, but it does take time, patience, and an eye for finding the good stuff. That's what the fellas at Superior Streetwear, Matthew Ball & Branson Russell, definitely have. With a really nice selection of vintage t-shirts, crews, tennis shoes, and so much more, you could literally go in and find an outfit to walk out with. For a great price, too. They want to see their finds out on the street, so if you make a reasonable offer, you may even get lucky.
Recently, the guys have welcomed a dynamic duo that puts the cherry on top of their already interesting inventory. Daddy Donald Douglas, OHS Class of '04 shout out! and his son Trey Douglas AKA "The Boss Hoss Jr." Trey is the one running the show, and he has been buying and selling vintage hats for three years now online with Retro Lids. They also clean and reshape them.
When he was twelve years old, he bought his first hat and was hooked. He told me, "My favorite part is looking up when the hat was made, what it was made for, and finding the value of it."
They have had a few real treasures in their collection, including a vintage Red Man parade hat that a local woman had saved from her old Pinkerton days. I had never seen one of those before. With a little brim and a pom pom on top, it's really unique and also really valuable. According to the original owner it's a "holy grail" of hats.
Last week, I hung out with them at 3032 Alvey Park Drive West where Superior Streetwear has welcomed Retro Lids to the fam. A whole wall of hats From CAT and Mack truckers to a wide variety of seed, feed, and agriculture brands. I found this awesome old Folger's hat there that I HAD to have. Waking up early during the week, it's not usually a good hair day, and I need my coffee!
It's such a cool vibe in there. Donald told me on a typical day, there is music going, and folks cutting up playing video games. "We're so glad to partner with these guys and Superior Streetwear. It's definitely a team effort to bring something cool to Owensboro. Gotta invite everyone to our grand opening party!" Saturday, September 21st, stop in and see them!
