It's hard to believe the COVID-19 pandemic launched five years ago. It's even harder to believe how something none of us EVER want repeated could lead to changes that many of us love. Working from home and the home delivery boom were as welcome a result as the pandemic itself was unwelcome.

Meijer Hours

Not too long before COVID hit, Kroger had already scaled back to closing at 1 AM. But that got scaled back even farther to 10 PM after the onset of the pandemic. Walmart and Meijer followed suit by also locking it up at 10. As someone who used to be a regular late-night shopper, I didn't like it initially. For one thing, there much fewer people in the store in the wee hours, something that was attractive during the era of masks and social distancing.

But I adjusted pretty quickly and now, I don't mind. Well...not as much, let's say. There are times when one might wake up in the middle of the night and realize they're out of, say, antacids. Fearing an inability to doze back off because of the heartburn, one wishes there was something else available rather than a min-mart where we KNOW something as simple as a Tums or Pepcid will be overly expensive.

Will Meijer Return to Being Open 24/7?

And THAT'S when I miss the availability of "open all night" the most. I don't need or WANT to do my main grocery shopping at 2:30 in the morning anymore, but I wouldn't mind being able to grab something that late in case of a small emergency. However, my concerns aren't as great as others, and I'm speaking of folks who don't get off work until midnight or later. Like "D.T.J." on X, for example...

And then I found this Reddit discussion on the matter. It's a real "point/counterpoint" conversation.

Is Meijer ever going back to 24 hours? Shopping after work was the best.

As far as whether or not Meijer will return to a 24-hour format, all I found was that they are merely considering it, but that source is from last fall. I have learned the chain is planning expansion at some of its locations, but any confirmation about a decision on re-expanding to 24/7 could not be found.
