Mermaids Return to Kentucky’s Newport Aquarium in 2024
You saw the 1989's The Little Mermaid. You've seen the 2023 version of The Little Mermaid. And there are those little cans of tuna. But you only THINK you've seen mermaids when your full mermaid experience has yet to begin.
The Legend of Mermaids
As an older child, I became interested in Greek and Roman mythology, but my biggest fascination, specifically, was with mythological monsters from ANY culture. So it came as quite a surprise to learn what I learned about the legend of mermaids. While multiple cultures have different versions, the Encyclopedia Britannica explains that most legends suggest that these half-human/half-fish creatures should be avoided.
And no, there has never been any evidence that they have ever existed, despite what some have been led to believe over the centuries. In fact, so persistent has that belief been that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, no less, has devoted a section of its website to discrediting such beliefs.
So maybe NOAA should visit the Newport Aquarium this year; they might change their minds. (Wink, wink.)
The Mermaids Return to the Newport Aquarium
In 2024, only the friendliest versions of, arguably, our favorite mythological sea creatures will make their return to the Newport Aquarium. It's long been one of the aquarium's most popular attractions.
"Mermaids" at the Newport Aquarium includes a meet and greet, the Mermaid Cove Stingray Experience, and the Coral Reef Tunnel Underwater Mermaid. And it all begins May 25th and will run through June 23rd. Additionally, "Mermaids" is not a separate fee; it comes with general admission.
So if you're ready for a fun-filled summer that also includes mythological sea creatures--the good kind--head to Newport and enjoy.
