Kentucky Is Rolling Out a New Traffic Signal System
I am always surprised when I approach what I feel is a busy intersection and I don't see a left turn arrow on the traffic signal.
That happened quite recently and, honestly, I can't remember if I was in Owensboro or elsewhere, but I sat there for about 10 minutes before I could turn. (I'm reading that and thinking how short that looks, but it's really an eternity at an intersection.) There was no green left arrow, and the oncoming traffic line was considerable. One car turns; the light turns red. The next car turns; the light turns red. 🙄 And so on...
Kentucky's New Traffic Signal System
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is introducing a new traffic signal system that addresses that erstwhile flashing green light that many intersections that need them don't have. However, it's going to be a flashing yellow light alerting motorists to watch for pedestrians and oncoming traffic before moving. (There are some things you don't think you have to tell people, you know?)
Here's a demonstration from Roseville CA, but this will soon be implemented across the Commonwealth. It looks fairly self-explanatory, but when it comes to traffic, I never take anything for granted. (Like the belief that everyone knows about "right of way," a story for another day.)
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is forever busy helping us stay safe on the roads, but it's always up to us to utilize what they implement wisely.
In other words, do NOT fear the roundabouts. (Again, a story for another day.)
