PROGRESS REPORT: New Owensboro Texas Roadhouse Set for May Opening
Sometimes Owensboro will get a new restaurant its residents (myself included) have been clamoring for, and sometimes, something new arrives that I’ve never heard of. Chili’s and Chipotle are two that ring out in my ahead with regard to the first category. Cheddar’s and Raising Cane’s belong in the second. And so does the popular joint at the heart of this story.
New Texas Roadhouse in Owensboro
Prior to the arrival of Texas Roadhouse on Goetz Drive next to the bypass/Frederica Street interchange, my knowledge of casual dining steakhouses consisted of Western Sizzlin’, Sizzler, and Ponderosa, all of which are still in operation in select locations…just not Kentucky. (Sizzler and Ponderosa nurtured my love of Texas toast, by the way.)
And that last comment serves as a good segue back to Texas Roadhouse which opened in 1997. I’d never heard of it when it got here, but the chain was only four years old at the time, so that’s understandable. But 28 years is a long time, and as wildly successful as Owensboro’s location has been—it’s always packed every time I drive by when it’s open—it’s a building with issues. Hence, the new location which I originally thought was just going to be an expansion.
The new Roadhouse will be the same size as the original and will be nearly complete when the original building comes down. There will be a period of time when both will be standing in that location.

But in May, when the new Texas Roadhouse opens its doors, you might as well call those doors FLOODGATES, because that’s what it’s going to look like.
