The Owensboro Fire Department is reminding residents to keep spaces around fire hydrants clear.

While they personally carry 750 gallons of water onboard, when that source runs out, OFD must be able to access a hydrant, day or night. Most hydrants are clear but this time of year, vegetation can start to grow up in and around hydrants.

The easiest thing to do, don't plant plants or flowers around a hydrant or hydrant area. The plants and/or flowers could be damaged once the hydrant is accessed.

The OFD is also reminding residents to not place temporary signs in and around hydrant areas. They need to always make sure a path between the hydrant and the street is completely clear. In the City, signs are not allowed in the right of way.
