Folks Have Been Wondering About the Owensboro, Kentucky Grandy’s — Still Closed After Three Months
This just goes to show you how little time I spend on South Frederica Street these days; I had no idea the Owensboro Grandy's was temporarily closed.
GRANDY'S IN OWENSBORO -- TEMPORARILY CLOSED
And yes, if you do a Google search on it, you will see "TEMPORARILY CLOSED" below a map TO and pictures OF the restaurant. When you drive by the self-described down-home chain, it doesn't look like anything's wrong other than the fact that there are no vehicles present at times when it would normally be open.
But if you take a closer look, you'll have your explanation.
THE FIRE AT THE OWENSBORO GRANDY'S
Grandy's is still recovering from a kitchen fire back in December.
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it HAS been more than three months since the blaze forced Grandy's to close.
Oddly enough, this was actually the SECOND fire at a tri-state Grandy's location in the last twelve months.
Last April, the Grandy's on Highway 41 in Henderson sustained damage from an early morning grease fire, which was quickly extinguished. And like the Owensboro fire, there were no injuries.
NO TIMELINE ON THE GRANDY'S REOPENING
I spoke to a Grandy's representative in Evansville who told me that the Owensboro store WILL reopen but there is no current timeline.
Back in the fall of 2019, the company that owns the franchise--it was based in Jasper--sold the Owensboro restaurant along with the properties in Henderson and Evansville. The current owners are based in Nashville.
THE HISTORY OF THE OWENSBORO GRANDY'S
I've been trying to find the date--or period of time, even--when Grandy's opened in Owensboro, but that has been difficult. I seem to remember my family eating at one before it opened here, but, honestly, I could be thinking of Cracker Barrel. But I do know this. My Aunt Flossie and Uncle Austin LOVED eating there. They visited weekly beginning right after they moved back to Owensboro from Florida. And that was the early 1980s. And I remember when it hosted car wash fundraisers for our speech team when I was in high school--ALSO the early 80s.
Grandy's has been on South Frederica a LONG time. And from everything I've learned, it will keep on keeping on once it opens back up.
We just don't know when that's going to be at the moment.
