When I plan a day trip, I like to find the destination, then determine what will be the drawing card at the destination. I then figure out what we'll do in addition to the main point of the trip. Often, the main point is a unique, or just a really good, restaurant. Fortunately, Kentucky rises to the occasion in this regard.

Moonlite BBQ

When I searched for Kentucky restaurants with weird menu items, the first one that came up surprised me. It's Moonlite BBQ Inn right here in Owensboro. In fact, it was once featured on Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods. And yes, it was because they famously serve mutton, which is the meat from sheep and sometimes lamb. Here in Daviess County, you can't throw a rock without hitting someone who loves it...like me. But folks from outside our "mutton realm" often turn their noses up at even trying it. I will never understand that.

610 Magnolia

610 Magnolia was also featured on Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods. It's in Louisville, and it features a gourmet menu with items you're not going to find just anywhere. When Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmer visited, he was there for wild game.

Take a look at a sample tasting menu, which changes periodically, and you'll see why it came up in my search.

Agave & Rye

The popular Lexington eatery brings patrons in the door in droves for a variety of delectable reasons. Or maybe it's because those patrons arrive at Agave & Rye for "The Big Thumper," the restaurant's signature taco made with peppercorn kangaroo meat, roasted corn, mac & cheese, green onions, queso, and habanero maple syrup. (I'd try anything that came with that last ingredient; color me very intrigued.) I was unable to find a clip from the Lexington location, but here's one from the Perrysburg, Ohio, location, and it features "The Big Thumper."

To answer his question, of course I'd eat it. I want one now.

Columbia Steakhouse

Two words...lamb fries. When I looked for Kentucky restaurants with weird menu items, lamb fries was the first reason given as to why Columbia Steakhouse appeared in my search. Since they're deep-fried lamb testicles, I know I'll never try them if I know what I'm eating ahead of time. Yes, I know there are those who will tell me I'd love them and should try them anyway.

I'm good.

So, of all the "weird" menu items we've covered today, I'd have to go with mutton as my top choice. For one thing, I've enjoyed it my whole life; it's extraordinary. After that, I'm more than ready to dive into "The Big Thumper." I would try just so I can say I ate a kangaroo taco, but it really does look good.

Happy weirdness, my foodies.
