I always get so excited for Fall to arrive in all her glory. She brings with her Pumpkin Spice Lattes, fun playdates at local farms, warm sunny days with cool nights, and the beautiful leaves changing colors all around us.

It's my favorite time of year until it's time to rake those leaves.  Just don't mind me when I start cussin' and fussin' out in the yard! Nevertheless, it is a chore that must be done. The City of Owensboro will begin making rounds for leaf pick-up starting today. Here's what you need to know.

Where Can I Find My Leaf Pick-up Zone?

Crews will begin collection in zone 2A. That is in the downtown J.R. Miller area. From the river to 9th street and Frederica to Triplett. After that, zones 2B, 2C, and 2D. If you're not sure what your home's zone is, there is a handy-dandy website you can visit for the service schedules in your area. Just type your address in and you're good to go! It can also tell you trash toter pick-up info and what fire department station serves your area.

If you didn't already know, this is when limb pick-up services are suspended until the next year. The wood chippers are changed out for those huge leaf vacuums you see sucking up piles along the streets.

According to the City of Owensboro website, here are some tips you'll need to know for leaf collection:

  • In the event that we are unable to meet that day's prediction, the crews will start back the following day where they had left off.
  • Loose leaves may be raked curbside for systematic vacuum collection.
  • Please keep all leaves behind the curb to ensure storm drains remain clear of debris.  Piles need to be within 6 feet of the curb, or they will not be considered to be out for collection by our department.
  • Do not cover water meter lids with your loose leaf piles, as our machines will remove them.  In addition to water meter lids, be mindful of your landscaping beds.  Mulch, rock, flowers, etc. could be taken unbeknownst to the operators until it is too late.
  • Leave plenty of clearance around your piles.  Do not block with parked vehicles.
  • The crews will pass through each of the zones one time, and will not be available to return for late rake-outs, inaccessible piles, and the like.

If you have any questions, City Action is available to take your call at 270-687-4444. Just be sure to get a few good jumps in before you rake your piles to the curb!
