My sister and I have discussed this a number of times and so I decided to put it out there and see if I can find folks who agree with me.

Keep in mind, this story is about how confusing Owensboro's streets can be if you're giving directions to someone not familiar with our city. I'm talking specifically about those that are "broken up" as you drive through town.

For example, you're cruising down Allen Street, headed north, and suddenly you hit 18th Street and it's not there anymore. It reappears four blocks later on 14th Street and takes you the rest of the way downtown. That's what I mean.

It didn't occur to me until years ago when I was trying to tell a relative how to our old house on Sunrise Drive from the Executive Inn. Somehow they'd gotten onto Allen Street and then when they hit 14th, they got lost.

It's the same story for certain numbered streets.

As I said, I grew up on Sunrise Drive and a VERY long time ago, there was a little convenience store right around the corner on 26th and Veach. Well, that stretch of 26th is a dead end and when I was a kid, I just assumed that it was the ONLY stretch of 26th...that is, until you get on Old Hartford Road and there it is again.

Of course it HAS to be broken up or it would go right through Rose Hill Cemetery and that wouldn't be good. Same situation for 21st through 25th Streets which can't be continuous because of Elmwood Cemetery.

I guess this is common; I haven't lived anywhere else. But it sure is confusing. Honestly, I was an adult before I realized there was another section of 25th Street on the east side.

THANKFULLY, it's 2021 and we have GPS. Honestly, I may depend on it TOO much if that's possible. But so far it hasn't led me astray.

And don't even get me started on all the "Griffith" thoroughfares we have in town.
