"Clang, clang, clang went the trolley; ding, ding, ding went the bell." -- Lyrics by Ralph Blane

That is, perhaps, the most famous line from "The Trolley Song." Do you think we'll ever see a re-enactment of that musical number from The Harvey Girls--starring Judy Garland--on the Owensboro trolley? Maybe not. But it would be cool.

Of course, you might be thinking, "Well...I haven't actually SEEN the trolley out and about in a long while." And you would be correct. Specifically, 12 months is how long a while it's been.

Like so many other events and services, the Owensboro trolley went dark, so to speak, at the beginning of the pandemic and has been quiet ever since. But in May, it will come roaring back to life and will once again provide the city with one of its unique highlights.

Beginning May 1st, the Owensboro downtown trolley will resume operations. Owensboro Transit manager Pamela Canary tells me that due to the "increasing number of events being scheduled"--like the Barbecue Block Party and Friday After 5, for example--it was time the trolley got back into action. The hours of operation will be Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 3 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM; and Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM and 4 PM to 10 PM, with a break from 7:20 PM to 8 PM.

The trolley service has been in operation since 2014 and is the best way to experience downtown Owensboro during events like the ones I just mentioned, especially Friday After Five.

We're all so excited to have a little normalcy return to Owensboro and the trolley is a very important part of it.
