A Kentucky Guy Found ‘Pizza Hut’ Potato Chips in the Middle East
Pizza Hut is part of the Yum! Brands network, which is housed in Louisville, Kentucky. That's like an hour and a half from where I live. Imagine my surprise when I found a Pizza Hut-inspired potato chip over in the Middle East- thousands of miles away from my home state. A quick disclaimer here. I suppose it's possible that these chips are marketed somewhere here in the U.S., but I had never heard of them until I stumbled across them last week on vacation.
I just visited Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel and made quite an interesting discovery at a convenience store on the island of Patmos. Patmos is beautiful, by the way. Here's a little sample "flavor" for you.
Now, on this small and gorgeous Greek island, I found Lays potato chips inspired by the 'iconic restaurant' Pizza Hut!
Naturally, I bought a bag. I think they cost me about 3 euros and I let the idea of them simmer for a few days. Yes, I took the bag back to my cruise ship and basically stared at it for five or six days wondering if Pizza Hut Lay's were a good idea or a test-kitchen malfunction.
I decided to save the bag for our journey home. While standing in the check-in line for our Italian Airways flight from Athens to Rome, I whipped the bag out, ripped it open and offered up the goods to my friends.
As it turned out, only a couple of us tried them. And you know what? They weren't bad, but they didn't really taste like pizza. At all. To us, they tasted like a mild BBQ-flavored chip. I am Pizza Hut fan and I was slightly disappointed. I wanted a chip that reminded me of those red and white checkered table cloths and red plastic soda cups. Instead, I got a chip that tasted like a BBQ potato chip.
To my surprise, these potato chips have been floating around Europe for a couple of years. I found a couple of taste-test videos on YouTube.
Check 'em out!
So, what do you think? Good idea? Or test-kitchen malfunction?
