Pouring sugar into someone's gas tank has, regrettably, achieved icon status in the world of revenge tactics. It's long been considered one of the worst things anyone can do to your car, short of setting it on fire.

Sugar in a Gas Tank

After doing a little research, I landed on some surprising results. While you should never pour sugar into someone's gas tank, it isn't the catastrophe we've always thought it was. It's mean. It's spiteful. It's hateful. But it isn't the end of your vehicle's engine. AutoZone reveals that your fuel filter won't allow any sugar granules into your engine. That's good news for your engine, but inherent bad news for your fuel filter, which would need to be replaced in most of these cases. Over time, it can also damage the fuel pump. Bottom line...it's bad; don't do it.

Salt in a Gas Tank

A woman in Madison County, Kentucky, was recently charged with criminal mischief after vandalizing her ex-boyfriend's car. Among many other things, she poured salt into the vehicle's gas tank. That was a new on me, but I could imagine how bad that would be. Having never heard of such an incident, I did more research.

SATJapan.com shares the ugly truth about such an act.

The most damaging result of pouring salt into a gas tank is the potential for harm caused to the engine. If the contaminated fuel makes it to the engine, this can cause internal damage through corrosion and wrong combustion. To this extent, the engine may most likely fire out of sequence, run rough, or just not start at all.

The website goes on to say that engines damaged by salt are most often cooked and will need to be replaced or rebuilt.
