This KY Bridge Is the Scariest One I’ve Ever Crossed
I have multiple friends and family members who are not fond of driving across bridges. The fear factor range stretches from "not comfortable, keep driving" to "I'm burying my face in the floorboard and sticking my fingers in my ears."
If you fall into the latter category, you could consider yourself gephyrophobic. If that's the case, I'm guessing crossing Chesapeake Bay onto the Delmarva Peninsula isn't on any of your bucket lists.
And if I were you, I'd skip Colorado's Royal Gorge Bridge which rises 955 feet above the Arkansas River. It is the nation's highest bridge, but I'm sure that isn't the data point that will entice you to it. I don't have a fear of bridges, but it would give ME pause. (And forget about the ziplining.)
The Scariest Bridge in Kentucky
And now we circle back to Kentucky which can throw its hat into this ring with a particular bridge that spans the Ohio River between Paducah and Brookport IL. We drove that bridge not too long ago, and I found it a bit startling. I'm not afraid of bridges, but the Irving Cobb Bridge should require a refresher course so your nerves can be prepared.
You heard that distinctive hum while the videographer was driving across it, right? Well, the bridge's driving surface is a metal grate. But that sound isn't why it's the scariest bridge I've crossed. The metal grate's grooves actually play havoc with your vehicle. Regardless of how tight your grip is on the steering wheel, it's going to move your car around. That made me very uneasy.
Again, I wasn't prepared for that experience, but I have to be honest. Now that I know what to expect, I'm going to head back and cross it with a different perspective.
And if I run into trouble, I'll hollar for Superman; Brookport is a neighbor to Metropolis, and we all know who "hangs out" in Metropolis.
