With the passing of the severe storms and the advent of clear, sunny skies, we're still not out of the woods. Concerns over any storm-related damage have given way to fears of what to expect once area rivers reach crests well above flood stage.

These images were taken in downtown Owensboro on the morning of Tuesday, April 8th.

Here's the same area from the day before.

Green River Flooding

Back in 1997, the tri-state dealt with another historic flood during which the Green River crested far above flood stage in the early half of March. Take a look at this graphic from the National Weather Service from that year. A number of records were broken, including the Ohio River crest at the Cannelton Lock. Still noteworthy, however, are those startling numbers for the Green River. Every crest was between 13 and 16 feet above flood stage.

Interestingly, this sort of thing has been on a 14 year cycle. We had disastrous flooding issues in 2011 and now again in 2025. And today's concern along the Green River matches those from 28 years ago. In fact, it's a dire enough situation that The Weather Channel's senior national correspondent, Justin Michaels, made his way to Calhoun KY for this update.

TWC's data indicates a crest at 33.5 feet this Friday, April 11th. That number is only a little more attractive than what we're getting from noaa.gov which indicates a higher crest of 34.8 feet.
