Three OHS “Kentucky Mr. Basketball” Alumni to be Celebrated at Friday Basketball Game

Only an elite number of Kentucky high schools can claim a Kentucky Mr. Basketball in their school history.

Owensboro High School has three: Randy Embry (1961),Jerry Thurston (1972) and Brandon Davenport (1997).  Coach Embry was the OHS head basketball coach when Brandon was chosen.  All three OHS alumni will be honored at the OHS vs. Owensboro Catholic High game on Friday, Dec., 7, in the OHS gym.

During halftime of the boys’ game, Mr. Basketball banners will be hung in the gym and the outstanding careers of the three players will be celebrated.

Randy Embry set the school record for the most points (50) scored in a game and had a career point total of 1610 while at OHS.  He went to the KHSAA Final Four with his team.  Later, Randy was the head basketball coach from 1981 and 1999 at OHS.

Jerry Thruston scored 1376 points during his high school career and was a member of the 1972 State Championship Team.

Brandon Davenport scored 1702 points for the Red Devils and set a school record with 15 assists in one game.  His Red Devils’ team won Regional and LIT championships.
