Ten Weird Food Combinations That Seem Gross but are Actually Delicious!
When it comes to food, I'll try anything once! We got to talking the other day about weird things we have eaten and interesting food combinations. Are some foods just inherently gross? Like a lot of things, I consider taste to be subjective. Everyone's taste buds are different and some popular foods are regional delicacies that other parts of the world may turn their noses up at. Here is a list that I compiled of food combinations that some people would consider gross, but I think are actually delicious! You may notice a bit of a theme.
1. Macaroni and Hot Honey
I think I discovered this one as a kid when the honey my mom gave me to dip my chicken in seeped over to the mac and cheese. I leveled it up as an adult by adding Mike's Hot Honey. Salty and Sweet is my jam!
2.Peanut butter with chili
This one I am not 100% sold on, but I know a lot of people LOVE it and won't eat chili unless a PB sandwich is on the side!
3. Fries and Frosty
This one is HEAVEN ON EARTH. There aren't many things better than a hot salty crispy fry dipped into an ice-cold sweet frosty! I recently introduced my son Rollins to this for the first time and he is totally hooked.
4. Pineapple and cottage cheese
I told Chad about this one and immediately started making gagging sounds. Cottage cheese is one of those things you either love or you hate, and I love it! My favorite is to put cucumbers, carrots, and peppers in it for a light fresh summertime lunch. However, there is just something about the cottage cheese that makes the sweetness of the pineapple even stronger.
5. Chocolate and bacon
A while back the maple bacon donut trend emerged and for good reason! It is DELISH. I recently bought a fancy-schmancy chocolate bar that had bits of bacon in it and it was amazing! Highly recommend!

6. Peanut butter and jelly with Doritos on it
I remember exactly when and where I was the first time I tried this. After a morning of swimming at Atlantis, I opened the cooler my mom had packed for us for lunch. A friend of mine joined us and put their chips on their sandwich! I immediately said "Ew gross!" but she suggested I try it. I was skeptical, but holy moly is it good! Sweet, salty, smooth, and crunchy, it checks all the boxes! Now it is a total nostalgic snack after pool time.
7. Chips and Nutella
I know I'm not alone in saying that I could eat Nutella with a spoon. Using a crispy potato chip as a vehicle for this hazelnutty goodness is a close second. I would say a Ruffle is best, but I guess you could use whatever is your fave.
8. Popcorn and marshmallows
I like to surprise Rollins with sweet treats mixed into our movie night popcorn and marshmallows are an interesting addition. They tend to melt a little bit with the heat of the popcorn and turn into a kind of "Rice Krispy treat" feel. Just more butter!
9. Grilled cheese and applesauce
You can never go wrong with a good ole grilled cheese! This combo would send me right back to childhood!
10. Jalapeño and Hot Chocolate
This is the only one on the list that is actually a traditional food item in Mexican culture. The pairing of sweet and spicy kicks it up a notch in the best way!
It would seem that each of these duos has a sweet and salty element! That contrast in flavors makes for an interesting experience for the palette. What are some strange food combinations you love? Share them with us today on our Facebook poll or submit them on the WBKR app!
