Your Taxes Are Not Due on April 15th This Year!

Hey!  I have some good news for you.  Well, a little bit of good news.  You actually get a few more days to file your taxes this year.  The deadline in 2017 is NOT April 15th and here's why!

April 15th, 2017 falls on a Saturday!  And that means April 16th is a Sunday.  Now, normally, that would bump the tax deadline to April 17th, but not this year.

April 17th, 2017 . . . the following Monday . . . is actually a holiday in Washington D.C.  It's Emancipation Day- the city's annual celebration and recognition of April 16th, 1862.  That's the day that President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia's Compensated Emancipation Act.  That act freed thousands of slaves in the city and occurred roughly nine months prior to the signing of the better-known Emancipation Proclamation.

Because April 17th is a recognized holiday in Washington D.C., many public services and business are closed for the day and that includes the IRS.  So, the nationwide tax deadline . . . at least for this year . . . is April 18th!

Enjoy those extra days to file!  But make sure you get those returns in the mail by April 18th!
