In the wake of a recent resurgence of welcome nostalgia, Pizza Hut is now dealing with a massive change on a whole other level. With stores restoring the old-school vibe by reintroducing Pac-Man, the buffet, those cool hanging lamps, and those signature red-checkered tablecloths, maybe we could have sensed a bigger change on the horizon.

Pizza Hut Sold

Yum! Brands, the Louisville-based company that has owned Pizza Hut since 1997, announced Tuesday that it is selling the chain in deals that are worth a combined $2.7 billion. LongRange Capital will assume operations outside mainland China, while Yum China Holdings will acquire the brand's mainland China business. Together, the transactions put Pizza Hut at a roughly $2.7 billion valuation and are expected to be completed later this year.

Now, one might think that Pizza Hut's "everything old is new again" approach at many of its locations might have something to do with the much bigger bombshell that was dropped on Tuesday, but that's not it, despite the proximity, time-wise.

Why Pizza Hut Was Sold

The big sale doesn't exactly come out of nowhere. In 2025, Yum! Brands' holdings enjoyed a 5% increase in revenue, while Pizza Hut's dropped by 2%. Additionally, it was announced in February that Pizza Hut would close 250 locations. It's also been suggested that food delivery apps like DoorDash have cut into Pizza Hut's sales.

Who knows? Maybe the return to a more nostalgic Pizza Hut design within each store will do the trick. Whatever happens, I don't expect the new owners to let much grass grow under their feet as they prepare to breathe new life into one of America's most recognizable restaurant chains.
