GOOD NEWS! Free Laundry Day Returns to Owensboro and Here’s How It Works

In April of this year, the Junior League of Owensboro hosted Free Laundry Day at two local laundromats here in town. Turnout for the event was tremendous. At one location, Junior League members shelled out $800 in quarters for the washing machines and dryers. At the other location, members handed supplied $500 in coins. In addition to $1300 worth of free loads of laundry, the Junior Leaguers also provided games and activities for the kids (while their parents were doing laundry) and free food. That event was such a success, the Junior League is bringing it back.

The next event is set for Thursday, September 14^th and will be held at Jo’s In & Coin Laundry at 1361 East 4^th Street across the street from Dee’s Diner from 10-2.  As with the previous event, there will be FREE coin laundry, FREE laundry supplies and FREE snacks and kids activities.

Free Laundry Day has become an essential component of the Junior League of Owensboro’s mission to combat hygiene poverty, an increasing problem here in Daviess County and surrounding areas. As a matter of fact, the Junior League has three additional events scheduled to help spread awareness about the seriousness and prevalence of the issue.

On October 17^th, the league, along with other community partners, will host an open-to-the-public forum at Girls Inc. That forum will tackle the issue of hygiene poverty and how community members can help combat it.

Then, when the league launches their annual Little Black Dress campaign, all the proceeds will be used by the Junior League for initiatives just like Free Laundry Day. The culmination of that week-long campaign will feature another free laundry event on Saturday, October 28^th. Though details and the location of that event are TBD, we do know this. Members of the Junior League will be symbolically laundering their little black dresses at the laundromat hosting the event.
