In a first for the state of Kentucky, Ohio County has created an online petition to gain signatures to put a referendum on a county-wide ballot. The issue? The wet/dry vote.

The state legislature back in January did away with the class system for cities. Soon after, Michael Adkins, a Beaver Dam resident, started to collecting signatures for a wet/dry vote for the city, which would mean Beaver Dam could decide independently on the issue. However, if the ballot measure fails, the city would have to wait three years to start all over again in gaining signatures for a vote.

If the county as a whole could vote before Beaver Dam could on the issue and it was defeated, the city wouldn't have to wait three years. This mean there could be two wet/dry votes within the next 6-8 months. Of course, both proposed votes would depend on if enough verifiable signatures are gathered. Ohio County Economic Development Alliance (OCEDA) Executive Director Chase Vincent announced plans last week for the online petition at a Hartford City Council meeting. The petition needs 2,247 signatures from registered Ohio Co. voters to bring about a special election.

The signatures must be accepted by Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway. See the petition here.
