I thought I'd hit a brick wall with this search, but I was wrong. I was looking for Kentucky festivals in February or March, realizing that winter months don't exactly scream "FESTIVALS."

If we're lucky, we get nice days, or even nice stretches of days, during which the weather is reasonably warm enough to be outside. But you can't really plan for it. However, if your festival is centered around one of the strangest occurrences in Kentucky history, none of that matters.

The Kentucky Meat Shower

On March 3rd, 1876, big chunks of meat fell from the sky. If I'd been around back then, I would have thought the world was coming to an end, even though "meat showers" don't exactly match up with biblical prophecies. Still...meat falling from the sky; those who were thinking "apocalypse" could be forgiven.

Only theories exist in terms of an explanation, and the best guess from scientists is that the meat had been regurgitated by vultures. One chunk of that meat is even a museum artifact.

(This is so gross.)

The Kentucky Meat Shower Festival

With this being the 150th anniversary of the meat shower, a celebration was in order, and it will happen at the end of February, near the anniversary date.

On Saturday, February 28th, from noon to 6 PM, the Bath County Memorial Library in Owingsville, Kentucky, will host the Kentucky Meat Shower Festival, complete with vendors, games, giveaways, and (gulp) tasty treats to sample. And yes, that last remaining piece of meat will be on display. This is so incredibly kooky, I love it.

And, by the way, I was going to leave you with, "don't forget your umbrella," but they beat me to it.
