Memorial Day Weekend calls for family time and good eatin'.  Our family has a tradition of making homemade ice cream and grilling out.  If you love ice cream, you'll love these recipes.

I remember going to my grandparent's house and my granddaddy would always make homemade banana ice cream and we would sit out on his big concrete front porch and watch the world go by and he would tell me stories as we swung on the swing.  It was my favorite place to be as a little girl.  I always wanted to be able to make ice cream and create those fun memories with my own kids.

I didn't actually learn how to make homemade ice cream until I was in my 20's and married and my boys pepaw Larry taught me.  He would always make Orange Sherbet around the Fourth of July and I could never get enough.

I love any type of homemade ice cream, but orange sherbet is the best.  He made it with 2-3 ingredients and it only took about a half-hour to make.  My love for Orange Sherbet grew even more after tasting it.

The summer before my momma passed away, she bought me an ice cream maker and after she was gone, I decided I would start making ice cream and memories as I had always wanted.

When the temperature heats up outside, you can literally set your clocks to my boys asking me to make sherbet.  Now, it's tradition every hot summer holiday I make it.

Here's a little secret, if you don't like the Orange flavor you can make this with any soda flavor you want.  It doesn't even have to be a name brand.  You can use generic brands and they work just the same.

What you will need:

  • 1 2 liter of Orange Soda (I use Sunkist or store brand either works)
  • 1 Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk (any brand)
  • 1 Can of Crush Pineapple (OPTIONAL)
  • Rock Salt
  • Ice
  • Ice Cream Maker
  1. Open Ice Cream Drum and pour in entire 2 liter of Orange Soda
  2. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk
  3. Add Crushed Pineapple (optional)
  4. Close Drum
  5. Add ice to the outside of the drum
  6. Sprinkle Rock Salt over ice
  7. Start the machine and watch closely.
  8. As the ice melts add ice and rock salt

It should take about 30 minutes when ice is added properly.  When finished, scoop into bowls and enjoy!

When I was the Summer Day Camp Director for the Owensboro Parks & Recreation Department we always made it with the campers.  It was their favorite "science experiment" of the year.  It is literally one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted.

Here's how to make it:

Ingredients

1/2 cup whole milk or half and half
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 Tbsp white sugar
6 Tbsp rock salt
1 pint or quart size zip style freezer bag
1-gallon size zip style freezer bag
ice

Instructions

Mix milk, vanilla, and sugar in a quart or pint size freezer bag and close tightly.
Fill a gallon-size freezer bag with ice and add the rock salt.
Put the smaller bag inside the large bag and close.
Shake & turn the bag for about 15 minutes or until the ice cream thickens.
Hold the bag with a dish towel or paper towel while shaking. And don't be afraid to have a little dance party while you're shaking.
Remove the inner bag from the ice/rock salt, and scoop the ice cream into serving bowls and add the toppings of your choice!

This ice cream literally tastes like real homemade ice cream for the maker.
