Here’s How You Can Drive a School Bus in Daviess County
Last year, I got to make my Ms. Frizzle dreams come true and drive a school bus for the first time ever. My friends with the Daviess County School transportation department invited me to their first-ever Test Drive a Bus event. Next time, I should go all out and dress up as The Frizz. Y'all remember The Magic School Bus right?
There was a driving course set up around Deer Park Elementary School with cones and places to practice backing up making turns. Lead trainer, Tina Gerteisen, guided me through a course and I tried my best not to take out any curbs or children at their football practice.
I was a little nervous and intimidated to drive such a big vehicle, but surprisingly, the school bus was very easy to drive. Trust me, if I could do it, anyone could do it. If you've ever wanted to try it out or think driving a bus would be fun, now is the time. Daviess County Public Schools Transportation department is looking for school bus drivers and they're offering a $1,000 sign on bonus.
You'd be joining a team of amazing drivers who share a love for their jobs. They are all so sweet and welcoming. Tim Trout, area Transportation Coordinator told me that the most rewarding part of driving a school bus is the relationships made with the kids he has taken care of over the years. They have sent him graduation announcements, wedding announcements and get excited to run into him at the grocery. To be able to make such an impact on students every day sounds really special.
Driving a school bus would be perfect for someone who is retired, but still wants to work some or be social during the day. It would be a great job for a parent who wants to be on the same schedule as their kiddo or enjoy summer and fall breaks with them.
