Enjoy an Enchanting Experience at Kentucky’s Largest Butterfly House
I don't care where I am or what I'm doing or what kind of mood I am in, when I see a butterfly, it's going to make me happy. I'll probably even exclaim, "Look! A butterfly!" I love watching them flutter in my mom's garden. Any time one lands on me, I can't help but feel special. Like a Disney princess or something.
If you love flowers, nature, butterflies, a trip to Wilson's Nurseries is in your future, specifically the butterfly greenhouse which is the largest in the state. Located in the Frankfort area, it would be a lovely way to spend a Saturday with some friends or fam.
Founded by Charlie Wilson in 1979, the "destination garden center" is now known as Wilson Plant Co. After his passing, Jennifer Wilson took up the torch to continue her late husband's passion for all things green and growing. In fact, the idea for the butterfly greenhouse was hers several years ago.
The butterfly greenhouse, open from June to October, is simply magical. Inside is filled with mostly nectar plants with some green for the precious pollinators to rest on. You can walk around and enjoy the beautiful flowers while butterflies dance all around, pick out a plant or two, before heading to the cafe for lunch. Here is a short and sweet video about the greenhouse and their mission to educate the importance of native plants and pollinators.
Speaking of the cafe, Sage Garden Cafe is a beautiful spot for brunch or lunch with fresh and delicious ingredients locally sourced and grown on the nursery grounds. Doesn't get any better than that! The website shares this,
"We serve fresh, healthy, good food sourcing ingredients from local suppliers. when seated on our patio and in our garden area, you’re surrounded by the very herbs and veggies that are in your favorite sandwiches, soups, and sides. our soups and spreads are made from scratch daily with our sandwiches served on gourmet housemade breads. our menu changes to reflect our garden’s harvest with seasonal specials."
It's not often you get to meet the pollinators who help grow the exact food you eat. Very cool! You can follow Wilson Nurseries on Facebook for more beautiful flowers and butterflies. Visit their website to plan your magical visit.
