Dolly Parton’s Owensboro Shows Ended With a Frightening Threat

While we're all still dealing with the magnitude of losing Dolly Parton, who passed away Tuesday after a "brief battle with cancer, " I'm remembering her 1983 visit to Owensboro and the Executive Inn Rivermont Showroom Lounge.

And, thanks to readers who were there, I've learned something about that visit that I never knew.

For those of you who don't remember--and you may not, since it was demolished 18 years ago--the Showroom Lounge was an attractive venue for some of country music's biggest names. Other stars outside the genre, like Natalie Cole, BB King, and the Little River Band, among others, also performed to sold-out crowds there, but the Showroom primarily hosted country acts. Icons like Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard were among the many who graced its stage. Superstars such as Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, and Brad Paisley were also booked early in their careers.

Dolly Parton DID Perform at the Executive Inn

For years, I had understood that Dolly Parton's scheduled Executive Inn performances in January of 1983 never happened because of a threat against her safety.

I was wrong.

After this story was originally published, readers who attended Dolly's shows at the Executive Inn told me she had, in fact, performed there before the threat was received. A look back at contemporary reports confirms it. The Jan. 17, 1983, edition of the Daily Iowan reported that Dolly had been performing to full houses at the Executive Inn before the threat forced the cancellation of her remaining shows.

And that makes this ticket from Friday, January 14, 1983, even more remarkable.

Dolly had already performed during her Owensboro engagement when, on Saturday, January 15, everything changed.

Dolly Parton Was Already in Owensboro

According to UPI, Dolly was in Owensboro when police received a call from a woman warning them about a threat against the country superstar.

This was another part of the story I never fully understood. Not only had Dolly made it to Owensboro, but she had already performed here.

And I apparently didn't know just how close her next concert came to happening.

According to a column in a 1983 issue of the industry trade publication Radio & Records, Dolly was preparing to go onstage at the Executive Inn at about 7 p.m. when Owensboro police received the call.

Unbelievable.

Two sold-out performances scheduled for that Saturday night were canceled, and Dolly left Owensboro under police escort.

If you're having as hard a time as I am believing ANYONE would want to harm Dolly Parton, UPI reported that the woman who warned Owensboro police said her husband "hated the ground Dolly Parton walked on." Dolly had also received threats connected to scheduled appearances in other cities, including Fort Worth, New Orleans, and Wheeling, West Virginia.

I cannot fathom why anyone would've wanted to harm this extraordinary human being, but the threat happened, and it understandably brought the remainder of her Owensboro engagement to an abrupt end.

The Dolly Parton Shows Owensboro Almost Lost to History

I never got to see Dolly perform live, and at that 1983 ticket price of $52.50 per person ($179.25 in 2026 dollars, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' inflation calculator), Dad wasn't springing for tickets, despite our love for the superstar.

But I love knowing now that some people in Owensboro did get to see her perform at the Executive Inn before that frightening phone call changed everything.

I'm left with removing seeing Dolly from my bucket list and indulging in any number of performances I'll find on social media platforms.
