Great Race Spring Rally Cruises into Downtown Owensboro on Kentucky Derby Weekend
Last June, the official starting line of The Great Race 2024 was held in Owensboro, Kentucky. That event featured 140 classic cars that left Owensboro and, after nine days and 2300 miles, concluded in Gardiner, Maine.
An Owensboro-based team, Brian Smith and Scott Howard (known as Team Bluegrass), competed in the race and represented the hometown crowd and local fans well!
Here's footage of the duo embarking on their first-ever Great Race! As you can see and hear, the atmosphere downtown was electric.

Well, now! The Great Race, at least a smaller version of it, is returning to Owensboro in 2025. The Coker Tire Great Race Spring Rally is coming to town for a three-day event that coincides with the Kentucky Derby.
According to Visit Owensboro, the event aims to "provide enthusiasts with a warm-up for The Great Race in June." The Spring Rally is the brainchild of Great Race Director Jeff Stumb and long-time Great Race fan and supporter Ted Stahl.
The three-day event will feature a record 83 cars. Friday, May 2nd through Sunday, May 4th, the competing vehicles will go out each day and 'race back to Owensboro.' The main event, which the public is invited and encouraged to support, takes place on Saturday, May 3rd from 4pm to 7pm CST. The cars will come racing back into town and will line up along Veterans Boulevard for public viewing. It will be incredibly similar to what fans of The Great Race experienced last year when Owensboro was the official starting line for the main event.
In addition to classic cars on display, there will be live music on the outdoor stage at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum. That live music will be provided by the popular local band Galactic Foghorn.
There will also be food trucks and mobile bars (featuring Kentucky Derby-inspired drinks and locally crafted beer).
