It’s National Pet Day & We Are Celebrating Your Pets
Today is National Pet Day and We want to Celebrate by honoring our precious friends.
GROWING UP WITH ANIMALS
Angel here and I grew up with some kind of pet my entire life. Both of my parents worked with animals so it was just a natural thing that I had at least one all the time. Momma was a Vet Tech and a dog groomer and my dad was a farrier. There was never a shortage of pet snuggles in our home.
REMEMBERING MY VERY FIRST PET
My very first pet was a Chihuahua named Spiked. My parents had him before I was born and everyone told my momma she needed to find him a home before I arrived. They said he would be jealous and might even bite me. If you knew my momma you would know she wasn't listening to a word they said and she knew her pup. When they brought me home from the hospital momma laid me on the bed and Spike jumped up sniffed me and jumped down and ran out of the room. My momma said she thought to herself "Oh no they were right" and then as if on cue Spike jumped back onto the bed and with his favorite stuffed toy in his mouth and laid it right by my side and then he laid next to me. She told me we were the best of friends and he was super protective of me. By the time I got old enough to talk, I couldn't say Spike so I called him Picklodeon (I mean really). He lived until I was three years old when we were at my grandmother's house and he was hit by a car. I was very little but I still remember the day so vividly in my mind. He was such a good dog.
CELEBRATING ALL MY PETS
There isn't a time I can remember that I haven't had at least one animal in my life. I had a pony named Beauty when I was five and one named Big Time (a very large Quarter Horse) when I was 8. I always had dogs and a tag-along cat. I wish I could say that I didn't have favorites but I did. Ok, so each of my pets were my favorite for different reasons. Big Time my horse was huge but he was so gentle and always took care of me when I was riding him. When my parents divorced we had to sell him and it tore my heart apart. Annie, my black lab was my buddy. She followed me around everywhere. I had her from the time I was 5 until I was 8. She had such a sweet spirit. Tickles (my Pekinese) and Troubles (my rescue cat) were with me after my parents divorced and kept me company when we moved. They were often the only friends I had because we moved a lot. Peaches (My Golden Retriever) was so special. We rescued him but he truly rescued me. He came in my teen years when I was struggling with a lot. He would lay in my lap and listen to me talk and sometimes cry.
BEST DOG EVER
Powder is quite possibly the most wonderful, incredible, and intelligent baby ever. I had her for almost 17 years. We got her from a family who could no longer take care of her and they dropped her off on our front porch. It was like she had always been with us. She grew up with me. She went to soccer practice and on runs with me and she even rode in the car to town. She hated being in the house and would sit in the front yard or on the porch even in the coldest of winter. Her spirit was so calming and she loved to give you her paw as a way of showing you she loved you.
MY GOLDEN GIRLS
Our family has two Golden Doodles that my son Tucker has deemed the Golden Girls ever so appropriately since I love that show. Layla Rose (named after Rose Nylund) is four, and Lilly Petrillo (Tilly) is almost 2. They are so much fun and make our lives interesting to say the least. They are loyal and protective and love without boundaries. When I say without boundaries I mean they lay on top of us, on our necks, in the bed with us, wherever they just have to be close.
We got Layla first. She is truly a heaven-sent blessing. We always say she was specifically made for our family.
Then came Miss Lilly (Lilliphant) she is like that one child that comes and shakes up your entire family and you are never the same. That's our girl and we couldn't love her more for it (well at least I feel that way.) LOL
OUR QUIRKY KITTIES
Some people just aren't cat people. Our family loves all the kitty cats. I have had cats for years. Cats unlike dogs decide day by day if they want to have anything to do with you.
I had Miss Jingles for nearly 17 years before she passed away this past fall. She quickly became Charlotte's favorite. Jingles was too old to run from her and I think she basically just loved that Charlotte loved her and took care of her. She would pack her around like a baby and snuggle her. It broke her heart when we lost Jingles. She still has times when she cries missing her.
Cheddar Boo is our rescue kitty from the Daviess County Animal Shelter. He's our boy. He's a big ole' barn cat that loves to hunt and cuddle my husband, Joe at night. He loves our doodles and isn't near as quirky as most cats.
This video below is before we got Cheddar. As you can tell he was working his magic on me so I would adopt him.
And finally, we'll finish with Trudy. She's been drama since she showed up last summer randomly while I was out of town. She was a tiny kitten and we took her in. She has quickly become Joe's cat. All the cats like Joe and the doodles love momma.
I can't imagine life without any of them. They make the days easier and more wonderful.
We would love to celebrate your pets. Head to the WBKR Facebook Page and post a photo of your pet.
