Is Kentucky a Good Place to Raise a Family? New Rankings Break It Down
Some states make raising a family feel a little easier than others, and a new study shows just how wide that gap can be. The most family-friendly states strike the right balance between affordability, safety, solid job opportunities, and access to quality schools, healthcare, and things to do. But where does Kentucky fall?
According to WalletHub’s latest rankings, Massachusetts topped the list of the best states to raise a family, followed by Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska, each standing out for a mix of affordability, safety, education, and economic stability. Here’s how the Commonwealth stacked up.
The Worst States to Raise a Family
At the other end of the spectrum, several states struggled to provide the conditions families need to thrive. Mississippi, West Virginia, and New Mexico ranked at the bottom of WalletHub’s study, which evaluated all 50 states using 50 key indicators tied to family well-being. The analysis examined factors such as median household income, housing affordability, healthcare quality, crime rates, and school performance. Kentucky also landed near the bottom, ranking 38th overall.

Challenges Facing Kentucky Families
The WalletHub study highlights some of the challenges facing families in Kentucky, particularly with financial stability. The Commonwealth ranked 46th in the nation for the percentage of families living in poverty, reflecting the long-standing issues tied to low wages, limited job opportunities in rural areas, and the decline of traditional industries. Combined with rising housing and healthcare costs, these factors continue to strain household budgets, making it harder for many Kentucky families to get ahead.
