Kentucky doesn’t usually land near the top of national rankings, especially when it comes to healthcare. But this time it did. A new study just ranked the state 4th in the country for maternity care. Finally, one we can get behind!

Kentucky Ranks Among the Best for Maternity Care

According to research from FHV Legal, Kentucky scored 78.25, placing it fourth overall. Only Utah, Maine, and North Carolina ranked higher.

That means Kentucky outperformed 43 other states. Not something you hear often, but it stands out here.

Support for Moms is a Big Reason Why

Part of the reason comes down to access. The study found that 7.35 hospitals per million residents offer lactation consultation, and 6.48 hospitals offer doula support.

Those numbers might sound technical, but the reality is simple. More support is available when moms need it, especially right after birth, when things can feel overwhelming fast.

More Birth Options are Available

The report also shows more flexibility in how women can give birth. In Kentucky, 5.62 hospitals per million offer VBAC, and 4.54 have midwives. That means moms have more options rather than just going with one plan.

The Bigger Picture Behind the Ranking

Daniel Harwin says strong maternity care is about more than just delivery.

High-quality maternity care is about safe delivery and providing families with a comprehensive support system,” he said. “When a state invests in a diverse range of services, from midwifery to specialized lactation support, it creates a safer, more empowered environment for mothers and newborns alike.”

How the Study was Done

Researchers looked at six factors across 47 states, including C-section rates for low-risk births and how many hospitals offer services like lactation support, doulas, VBAC, postpartum tubal ligation, and midwives.

The data comes from the 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, based on hospital reports from 2024. States missing data, including North Dakota, South Dakota, and Vermont, were not included.

What it Means for Kentucky Families

This does not mean everything is perfect. Access can still depend on where you live, especially in rural areas.

But it does show that in many parts of Kentucky, families have more support and more options than people might expect. And that can make a real difference when it matters most!
