At a time when most of us can scarcely afford to let any money slip through our fingers, it only makes sense to take advantage of benefits to which you are entitled but may not know about.

Benefits Available to Kentucky Seniors

The National Council on Aging has created a Benefits Participation Map that lists the programs in which seniors can enroll and from which they can start collecting. Older Americans on fixed incomes spend time deciding on where to focus their money while figuring out what to sacrifice "for the time being."

SNAP Benefits

Many older Kentuckians are missing out on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits by 67%. That's right. At present, just 33% of senior Kentucky residents are not taking advantage of this invaluable service, which provides monthly food assistance. More than 100,000 eligible citizens are not enrolled; that's $192 million left on the table.

Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is exactly what it sounds like...monthly financial aid. But only 50% of Kentuckians who qualify are enrolled in the program. That means that more than $210 million is just sitting there. In this day and age, needless to say, it should not just be sitting there.

Medicare Savings Program

As for the Medicare Savings Program, elderly Kentuckians can use it for Medicare deductibles, premiums, and co-insurance. But only 42% of Kentuckians who can take advantage are taking advantage of this invaluable service. That leaves just over $200 million in the till.
