Learn Before You Burn!!
The CB Radio Show welcomed Ashley Adams who helped us become familiar with laws regarding what we can burn and what we cannot burn here in the homestead. Between October 1st and December 15th, it is Fire Hazard Season. Burning within 150 feet of any woodland area is allowed only between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The fines for burning illegal objects and materials can reach up to $25,000 per day. We learned that the list of what we cannot burn outweighs what we can burn outdoors.
Burning can cause serious health risks. Due to the differences in materials used in common products today, plastic, chemicals and other synthetic materials wind up in the trash. Once these materials are burned, harmful toxins are released into the air.
WHAT WE CANNOT BURN:
Fence posts, sawdust, wood mulch, wood shavings, wood chips, pallets or pressure, treated wood
Chemical containers, furniture, rubber, used oil, tires, carpeting, insulation
Cans, glass, plastic, coated paper products
Construction debris, dry wall, shingles, asbestos materials
Animal bedding, grass clippings, hay
WHAT WE CAN BURN:
Plant beds, tobacco curing, leaves & weeds, storm debris such as tree limbs,
camp fires, ceremonial bonfires, cooking, uncoated household paper, cardboard products
Also, when it comes to warming fires around a construction site,.the fire must be contained in a 55 gallon drum, while burning clean lumber only, and only when the air temperature is below fifty degrees.
It is very important to report illegal burning. If you see someone burning illegally, you can call 1-888-BURN-LAW. This is an anonymous call. You can also visit them online to see the full list of things we can and cannot burn. Click here to learn more.
