Kentucky Artist Creates Unique Jewelry Line and Her Son Helps Her Make It
Lisa Duvall, who lives in Owensboro, KY, is an incredible artist. Until now, she's been best known for her rather gruesome eye for detail. Lisa actually worked on the movie Halloween Kills and helped create some of the gory props and makeup effects in that film.
These days she has turned her attention to something a little more tame and beautiful. I suppose it's safe to say she's gone from Halloween Kills to "Handmade with Love."
Lisa says her new hobby is the result of a complete accident. She says, "I was scrolling online looking for new earrings. I found the cutest sugar cookie earrings and thought- I can make these!" So, she watched some "How To" videos on line, ran to Hobby Lobby and it "spiraled out of control from there."
These earrings, by the way, are the culprit.
Lisa quickly enlisted the help of her son, Reece. Lisa says, "He would sit with me and help me." Of course, Reece shares his mother's love for horror films, so he's sculpting Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees earrings when he's not helping her make sugar cookies.
Lisa says they got really good at making the earrings quickly. Before she knew it, they had created 15 different types. And she admits that she didn't realize just how many people would fall in love with her sugar cookie earrings the first time she wore them. They caught on rapidly, and, as of this story, she's already sold 30 pairs of them. And, honestly, that wasn't even her intent.
But now, Lisa's all in on her latest creative endeavor.
This represents her first batch of earrings, which sell for $5 to $10 per pair depending on the style. Lisa says, "Some are cuter than others, but again, I'm still learning."
Lisa equates her jewelry design with the early days of her horror makeup career. She says, "Looking back at all the first makeups I did, I think- Why did I ever think that looked good?" But Lisa is a consummate professional and she trusts her abilities. She says, "Hopefully, this will take off!" She hopes to one day be able to look back on her initial designs and creations and say, "Wow! Look how far I've come!"
Lisa's calling her new venture Dawnie Studs. "Dawnie" is her family-given nickname. And, of course, studs are her favorite kinds of earrings.
Lisa and Reece joined me on my radio show to chat about the new venture and the fun of working together.
If you'd like to place an order, you can do so by messaging Lisa on Facebook. She says several styles are already sold out, but she plans on restocking in the next day or two.
