Louisville’s St. James Court Art Show Will Feature Over 600 Artists This Year
When I was a student at the University of Louisville, I lived on campus. Right by the Old Louisville part of town which is absolutely gorgeous when the leaves start to turn colors in the fall.
The first weekend of October was always marked on my calendar. When that Friday rolled around, as soon as class was over, I would put on my headphones, turn on my iPod and walk down to the St. James Art Fair. One of my all-time favorite Kentucky events and it will be celebrating its 68th year in 2024.
It first began in 1957 with only eleven artists determined to raise money for maintenance and repairs to St. James Court. It is now such a huge staple in the community that schools are out of session, thousands of folks travel from all over the country to visit and there are now over 600 artists who participate. Wow!
Owensboro's own K.O. Lewis showcases his incredible paintings and prints there, and he was even chosen as the yearly poster contest winner several years ago. I am always blown away by his work. Not just the skill and colors, but the meaning behind each piece. Just stunning! The painting of Muhammed Ali holding a butterfly gives me goosebumps. Here's a fun look back at the year he designed the art show poster.
K.O. will be there again this year displaying his gorgeous artwork. I love looking around at all of the handmade items and admiring how much talent goes in to making every piece. Don't get me wrong, its inevitable that I end up finding a thing or two I can't live without. From paintings of all mediums, sculptures, stained glass, woodwork, pottery, fiber arts, jewelry, photography, and so much more.
You could stay all day and probably not see it everything. Good thing there are also delicious food vendors to keep you going! Be sure to like the St. James Court Art Show Facebook page for more information as the countdown to the 2024 festival is officially on!
