Move Over Macy’s! The Planets Are on Parade This Summer

2024 has been an epic year for astronomical events. We celebrated an extra day thanks to the Leap Year and the once in a lifetime total solar eclipse over the tri-state.  Most recently, an electromagnetic storm meant an Aurora Borealis gave one heck of a light show without us all having to pack up and travel to Alaska.

I love a good parade. We always tune into the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Chad is the best emcee of our Owensboro Christmas parade.  My friends in Clarkson, KY are pros when it comes to their Honey Festival Parade. However, there are six planets preparing for the coolest parade in the whole solar system.

Which Planets Will Line Up and When?

This summer, on June 3rd between 5:00 and 6:00 AM, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will line up and if you are in the right part of the world, you'll be able to see them all. If you have really good eye sight (hopefully you've been eating your carrots) you should be able to view Jupiter, Mercury, Mars and Saturn with the naked eye.  With the help of a telescope or even some binoculars, folks can see Uranus and Neptune that are further away.

Which States Will Have the Best Parade View?

East coast states, especially New York, will get the best show with all six of the planets. Here in the tri-state, we will see three maybe four of them if we're lucky! Cloudy conditions or city lights could dull the view, but a quick trip out to a county spot would be the best place to try and see the parade.
