Kentucky Singer-Songwriter Performs on the Porch of Patsy Cline’s Childhood Home
Owensboro, KY singer-songwriter Josh Merritt had an eventful first week of October. He had a gig at the Bright Box, a live music venue in Winchester, Virginia. Josh says Winchester is a "really neat town, a really artsy town."
Well, it's also a town rich in country music history. Winchester happens to be the location of Patsy Cline's home when she was a teenager.
Patsy's mom, Hilda, lived in that home until she passed away in 1998 and the property was eventually purchased by the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society. Today, Patsy's home- that she moved into when she was sixteen-years-old, is open for tours.
Well, the morning after his gig at Bright Box, Josh, along with his sister Whitney (who's a huge Patsy Cline fan), got to take one of those tours.
While he was there, the folks with the Historical Society told him he could set up shop on Patsy's front porch and play a couple of her songs. Naturally, not able to refuse an invitation and offer like that, Josh got his guitar out and honored one of country music's biggest legends.
While in Winchester, Josh also visited Patsy's grave site. Of course, Patsy's real name was Virginia. The country icon is buried in a very "modest" plot next to her husband, Charlie Dick.
Josh says "you wouldn't know the grave is Patsy's unless you pay close attention to the 'small print' which says Patsy Cline."
Josh says he's never visited the grave of a celebrity before, but was in awe at how many people visit the marker and leave coins behind to pay tribute to Patsy and commemorate her undeniable country music legacy.
