One of the best movies of the 1980s features a cast of then-unknowns and probably because they were kids; none of us, reasonably, had ever seen them before. But soon after the opening credits began to roll, we were hooked, and Stand By Me was on its way to becoming a classic.

Stand By Me

Directed by the late Rob Reiner, Stand by Me, adapted from a Stephen King short story, tells the tale of Gordie, Teddy, Chris, and Vern (Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell), four adolescent friends in Oregon who set out on a journey to find the body of a stranger they've learned was killed not too far from their homes.

The critically-acclaimed adventure (it currently sports an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score), sees our four heroes intertwine encounters with leeches and a mean old junk man with revelations about their home lives. In so doing, their friendship becomes a deeper one, and their quest takes on new meaning.

Stand By Me Reunion in Louisville

If you're as big a fan of the movie as I am, you'll probably want to make your way to Louisville on November 13 for a special anniversary showing of Stand By Me at the Louisville Palace. Bring any and all questions to "Stand by Me: The Film and Its Stars 40 Years Later" because stars Wil Wheaton, Jerry O'Connell, and Corey Feldman will be on hand to answer questions and, presumably, share behind-the-scenes stories from the film shoot and about their late co-star, River Phoenix, who passed away in 1993.

On a nearly $8 million budget, Stand by Me grossed $52 million, the equivalent of $159 million in 2026 dollars.

I'm already imagining fascinating discussions about working with Rob Reiner and Stephen King and just the basics like location shooting. It should be an amazing night.
