In a world that continues to move in a digital direction, it is getting harder and harder to find physical copies of our favorite forms of entertainment. DVDs, CDs, and video game discs seem to be going the way of the dodo. Many new car stereos don't even come with a CD player anymore, and stores like Best Buy and Target are longer carrying DVDs anymore. And now it seems Walmart is joining in the trend.

One industry expert predicts that in 2024, consumers will no longer be able to purchase Xbox game discs at Walmart. Josh Fairhust is the CEO of Limited Run Games, he says...

I would expect to see this trend continue in 2024. I've heard rumblings that Wal-Mart is dropping physical Xbox games soon, and I have to imagine further cuts to physical gaming sections will be made as we get deeper into next year.

Get on Board or Get Out of the Way...Right?

I guess this trend makes sense when you consider the fact that new consoles from PlayStation and Xbox are now being made digital only, and a majority of consumers/gamers purchase all their titles online. I reckon this is what progress looks like.

I'm an old-school guy who has worked in radio for nearly 30 years, so I still enjoy holding onto music, whether it's vinyl, cassette, or CD. I like reading liner notes and hearing the crackle of an old record. Having said that, I also enjoy being able to quickly and easily compile a bunch of different playlists, and I couldn't tell you the last time I bought a DVD.

I would not be surprised to see, many years from now, some of these "old" formats (CDs and DVDs) make a comeback, kind of like vinyl is doing right now, and like countless fashion trends have done before. Somewhere down the line, someone will get the urge to go all "retro" and bring them back.
