I've always enjoyed watching movies, but I don't mind ambience from time to time. I love movie theaters, and they provide plenty. As for drive-ins, I'm not sure the movie even has to be that good. Talk about atmosphere.

Cherokee Caverns

But what do you think about watching a movie underground? Well, sort of. In Knoxville, Tennessee, Cherokee Caverns provides patrons with that opportunity. Unlike most other cave attractions, Cherokee Caverns is run by volunteers and is not open for cave tours. Yes, it is open to the public, but only for special events, and the Cherokee Caverns calendar is full of them.

Movies in a Cave

One of Cherokee Caverns' biggest draws is Movies in the Cave, and that series, loaded with familiar favorites, begins on May 23rd with Jim Henson's Labyrinth, starring David Bowie. The series continues monthly through November. June's offering is Shrek, followed by Tim Burton's original Batman in July (talk about the perfect cave movie),  horror classic The Descent (another good cave movie) in August, Hotel Transylvania in September, Hocus Pocus in October, and, finally, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. (By the way, I see the "cave thread" running through all of these titles now.)

Speaking of the cave, the temperature is a constant 58 degrees, meaning those November movies offer the same level of comfort as those in the warmer months...something YouTube's Spa Guy knows all too well. Skip to 2:44 for the cave entrance.

Depending on the runtimes, there are five or six showings on each date.

Halloween and Christmas in the Cave

Trick or Treat in the Cave and Christmas in the Cave are still in the planning phase, and if you'd like to be a vendor or a volunteer, you'll find the Halloween form here and the Christmas form here.

And maybe now you've found yet another fun getaway for summertime, Halloween, or the holiday season.
