Next time you're taking a stroll down Franklin Street, you will notice a new addition to the lawn of the westside library branch at the corner of Franklin and Wabash. It's kind of little, so you might miss it if you're not paying attention. If you are paying attention, you will notice a "Little Free Pantry" that wasn't there before.

The Little Free Pantry Movement

This Little Free Pantry is more than just a neat thing that a woman in Evansville decided to do - it is a project/effort/movement/etc that is popping up in more and more communities around the country. The map below gives you an idea of just how many free pantries there are.

I love how Little Free Pantry describes itself online...

We are not an organization, and we are not a nonprofit. We are neighbors. We don’t have a lot of time, and our budgets are nearly maxed. But we see our neighbors’ daily struggles and feel called to do something in a way that reflects our shared values—compassion, generosity, and trust.

Who is the Pantry For?

The Little Free Pantry is for anyone that needs it, whether you need to take something from it, or if you need to help fill it up again. You might fall into both categories from time to time. As the sign says, "Take what you need, give what you can."

What Should We Fill It With?

Guidelines are always a good thing to have, but I would also like to think that a bit of common sense could be used here.

  • Do's: Things like canned vegetables and proteins, personal care items, and paper goods. Kid-friendly non-perishables, crayons, and seasonal items.
  • Don'ts: Nothing sharps (razors), no chemicals or previously worn clothing. Nothing harmful or illegal.

Install Your Own Little Free Pantry

A wise man once said, "ain't nothin' to it but to do it." That's the best advice I could give to someone who's thinking about adding a Little Free Pantry to their area. It seems to me there really isn't a right or wrong way to do it, but, LittleFreePantry.org has plenty of resources if you do have any questions. From the pictures I've seen of other pantries, it looks like you can build one from scratch, or find something else to repurpose - it's up to you.
