Would You Support a German Autobahn-Style Kentucky Highway?
Back in 2011, on a trip to Mount Rushmore, I saw a 75 MPH speed limit sign for the first time in my life. I encountered it when I crossed over into South Dakota. Since I usually kick my speed up a little past the little, I was totally down for this adventure
On a more recent jaunt through South Dakota, the limit had increased to 80. But that's plenty fast enough for me, so that's where I set my cruise control.
The Highest Speed Limit in the Country
Several years ago, I heard there was no daytime speed limit in rural Montana. I don't know if that was true, and it WAS a long time ago. But it's also 80 MPH now. Texas is the only state where you'll find a higher speed limit. On a 41-mile stretch of State Highway 130, NOT an interstate, you can drive 85 MPH.
Duped By an April Fool's Joke
Just when I thought April Fool's jokes had become so common that no one could possibly fall for them anymore, I fell for one. It was a Facebook post that indicated that Texas was going to one-up itself.
It was NOT posted on April Fool's Day, so that's how I got got. But no, this is not happening. There will be no German 'Autobahn-style' highway in the Lone Star State. But if it WERE to happen, that's where I would put it, too.
'No Limit' Kentucky?
What about right here in the Commonwealth? Would you support such a stretch of highway? Germany's Autobahn has been in existence for over a century and is actually a SERIES of highways, not just one long road. Encompassing more than 8,000 miles, the Autobahn isn't actually without restrictions. There are SECTIONS that are free of limits, but the majority of, arguably, the world's most famous highway does have a speed limit of 120 KM/HR which translates to about 75 MPH. What's more, a majority of German citizens WANT restrictions on the Autobahn and are not comfortable with a free-for-all.
So don't ever look for something like this to come to Kentucky. We're not big enough, we're too mountainous in the east, and, let's face it, you just don't give SOME drivers that kind of leeway.
