Why is “6-7″ the 2025 Word of the Year on Dictionary.com?
For about ten months now, if you have a pre-teen/teenager, you've been confused as to why they are so obsessed with two little numbers, six & seven. When I say obsessed, this is what I'm talking about.

These kids gathered to wait at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant for the 67th customer, just so they could cheer "6-7" with the worker as he called it over the speaker. He is clearly as pumped as the crowd is on the other side of the counter. OK, but "WHY?" is the question here. I mean, random, funny slang has been a thing since probably the caveman days, like 6-7 B.C. (sorry, I had to.) For all we know, buffalo cave drawings could be that generation's adolescent language trend. Maybe not, but that's funny to think about! My generation went around making an X symbol over their crotches thanks to professional wrestling.

Let's consult the experts, shall we? Middle school teachers. Angels on Earth. Wranglers of the pubescent little gremlins. They are fighting for their lives in a world of "mids" and "fires" and now, numbers. Math teachers rejoice, kinda! Apparently, it's going a little something like this:

The kids who have latched onto this use it at every chance. Even if it doesn't make sense. Or they will try to set up their parents or teachers to say it, so they can then repeat it.
@mr_lindsay_sped What do you guys think? Is #67 going anywhere? #sixseven #teachersoftiktok #genalpha ♬ original sound - Mr. Lindsay
Where did 6-7 come from? According to Dictionary.com:
The origin of this most modern use of 67 is thought to be a song called “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Skrilla. (This is an opportune moment to mention that you may also see it written as 6 7, 6-7, or six-seven, but the most important thing is to never pronounce it as “sixty-seven.”) It was quickly reinforced by viral TikToks featuring basketball players and a young boy who will forevermore be known as the “67 Kid.” Within weeks, teachers were trading tips online about how to get their students to stop saying 67 all day long.
Actually, some clever teachers have embraced it in their lessons. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, right? From math lessons to music lessons, to the history of 1967.
You can read more about how this phrase skyrocketed in popularity of use online this year. That's part of the data examined to determine the official word of the year by Dictionary.com. Do you believe "6-7" is a good pick for the 2025 Word of the Year? If not, what do you think it should be?
