Angel Explains Why Parents Should Never Compare Parenting Skills
Angel Here! We all know that I am no June Cleaver LOL! My kids are not exactly perfect little angels...on the contrary, they are far from it! I have learned I am not alone.
Social Media has allowed for most people to hide what truly goes on behind their computer screens. This creates an insecurity amongst everyone especially parents!
I found myself feeling this way last week when I went to pick up my son Tucker at school. He just started Kindergarten this year at Sutton Elementary. He has an awesome teacher! As I walked up the breezeway I see her bringing him out and he has this look on his face. She tells me he had a rough day and had to do a reflection paper. At this point I am feeling mad and a bit embarassed as we turn and take the walk of shame back down the breezeway through all the other parents.
We get home and I pull out his paper to find out he was talking (he comes by that honestly), rambunctious (again in his blood), and throwing plastic bugs across the room (okay hit the brakes please)! I mean really what did those bugs ever do to you!?
I lost my crap for a good five minutes and then laid down the law and sent him to his room. When I went to bed that night I began to think to myself I bet my kid is the only one in the whole school who has gotten in trouble since school started! I was kind of deflated.
NOPE! The next day Joe tells me that his friend's son who is in Tuck's class got in trouble right along with him! LOVELY! I was sharing my experience with some other parents at the pool this weekend only to find out once again I was not alone!
I say all this not to condone his behavior but more to reassure any parent who has felt like I did IT'S ALRIGHT! You aren't alone! You are doing the best you can. You can't hover your kid 24/7. I mean who would want to that sounds awful!
I have come to terms with the fact I am not a cookie cutter momma. My kids aren't model students, they don't get picked out to be teachers' favorites, and they aren't the star athletes. Sometimes we forget homework, they go to school not matching, we wear dirty socks, and have messy hair. What I do know is my kids are super smart, nice to others, have outgoing personalities, gifted musically, they know they are loved and each paves their own unique path. I raised them to be this way. They have a whole lot of their momma in them and beat to their own drum.
I refuse to allow what other families are doing dictate or define who we are as a family. We are one of a kind for sure! As the year continues I am sure I'll have more stories to tell. It makes for good radio right! And it will also make for great stories when they all start dating :)
So now I say to each of you: SHOULDERS BACK, SMILE ON, LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND TELL YOURSELF "I ROCK AND I'M NOT ALONE! NOW GO KICK BUTT!
