I don't care how old I get; farts will always be funny. A gross, stinky yet very natural part of life that I wasn't always able to embrace.

As a little girl, I was raised to be "a lady." That meant I could not pass gas from either the top or the bottom all willy-nilly. I took etiquette classes and was taught proper manners. I would have NEVER just let 'er rip out in public or anything. I didn't even know HOW to burp until I went to college. My roommate was a huge tomboy and took it upon herself to teach me.

I mean, everybody does it. Even proper ladies! It is just one of those fun tricks that come along with having a digestive system. Some scientists in Australia conducted a research experiment to determine just how often the average person farts. Using an App called...wait for it... Chart Your Fart.

Participants over the age of 14 could choose to track their toots by logging every time they passed gas over a three-day period. 6,416 individuals entered 360,192 outputs (AKA farts). They also tracked folks' Dietary Energy and Dietary Fiber. While this method doesn't account for nighttime flatulence, it found an increase after standard meal times.

I would think it comes as no surprise that men account for more farts than women. However, the average number overall is five farts a day. Of course, that means that some fart less and some fart more, but I would say that sounds pretty normal? People aged 26-45 were the gassiest in this study.

You might be thinking, why are researchers studying farts of all things? Well, as mentioned before, everyone does it. How often it occurs could signal allergy problems or other gastrointestinal health issues. All kinds of factors can play a part, but when it becomes "excessive," that could mean something more is going on.
