Get Ready for the Tri-State’s First Hard Freeze of the Season, Coming Next Week
You don't exactly have to run around like a chicken with its head cut off in your preparations, because we're still about a week away from what's expected to be a hard freeze. It would be the tri-state's first of the season.
First Hard Freeze
When I was chatting with Eyewitness News Chief Meteorologist Wayne Hart earlier this afternoon, we discussed the tail end of his seven-day forecast. It made me utter an exclamation, and quite loudly, I might add. While the numbers are expected to change between now and then (for the better or, yes, the worse), here's what I was looking at.
But those numbers won't change dramatically, as forecasters are telling us to expect temperatures in the 20s by next week. I love the fall, but I also know this season comes with early side dishes like that from time to time, and here we are.
Yes, the blue represents snow, and it doesn't look like we're due for any in Owensboro or Evansville. Plus, he says in that post that whatever snow does fall in central Kentucky will have a very short life span.
How to Prepare for a Hard Freeze
Some of the tips I found at nbutexas.com are really for when the temperatures dip way below freezing. But others on the list are appropriate for what we're expecting. The main thing is to bring any vulnerable plants and flowers indoors. While they might survive a frost, they're gone if they're outside during a freeze. You'll also want to get all the water out of your hoses and then store those hoses.
There's also advice about pipe insulation, and it's not a bad idea to go ahead and get that started. Most pipe issues regarding the weather occur way down into the 20s or the teens. Still, if you feel froggy, jump. That way, you won't have to worry about it later.
