Owensboro Parks & Rec Offering Men’s/Co-Ed Adult Flag Football Leagues this Spring
When I was in college at Kentucky Wesleyan College, my fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, had a long-standing, annual rivalry with Sigma Nu. The incoming pledge class from each fraternity squared off against each other in a big flag football game in the quad of the campus. It was very competitive. Both fraternities took it very seriously. But, it was also a heckuva lot of fun. I remember playing in the game was a pledge and I still remember "tackling" the flags on particularly fast Sigma Nu during the game. He was fast. I was just as fast and I dove for him as he tried to run the ball for a touchdown. I managed to stop that by ripping his flags off as he barreled down the sideline.
It's crazy that I remember that over 30 years later, but that's how fun that flag football game was. That's how fun flag football is. And that's precisely why Owensboro Parks and Recreation just announced that they will, for the first time ever, host Spring Adult Flag Football Leagues this year.
The dates for the league are April 30th through June 25th and teams will square off on Saturdays and Sundays (mornings and afternoons). Owensboro Parks and Recreation is offering two different divisions: Men's Competitive and Coed Recreational.
Here's how the league will work:
-An 8-game round-robin schedule
-Post-season single elimination tournament
-15 championship shirts for the tournament-winning team
All games will take place at Jack C. Fisher Park on the "5th Field" (which is on the other side of the parking lot from the main complex).
The registration fee is $365 per team and the registration deadline is Friday, April 14th. You can have up to 12 players on your roster. The games will be 6 on 6.
If you'd like more information about the league and want to sign your team up, call Owensboro Parks & Recreation at 270-687-8700.
