Yesterday was full of big news for Owensboro! I'm sure y'all saw the announcement that a favorite grocery store chain has made plans to build a location on the East side of town.

Gateway Commons off of Hwy 54 will soon be home to a Publix grocery store. Our friends at Eyewitness News reported, "the location will be at Publix at Gateway Commons on the northwest corner of Pleasant Valley Road and Hayden Road. The 50,325 square ft. store will employ approximately 150 associates."

This Owensboro Publix location will mark the 11th announced in the Bluegrass state as the chain expands. I don't think I've ever been to a Publix. At least long enough to remember what makes it so special, but my friends are bursting at the seams excited that we'll have the store in the community. So, I asked them to give me the scoop! They typically have pretty great taste, so here is what they told me they're excited about.

CAKE, CAKE, CAKE

First off, A LOT of folks are pumped about the cake. My friend Lexi (one of those friends with great taste when it comes to sweets and treats) said, "Their cake is to die for." I will gladly put that to the test! They'll even decorate them with whatever you're celebrating. Even if it's just a "yay! you made it through the week!" cake.

Key Lime Pie, Please

The theme of sweets continued as Chef Cam shouted out the Key Lime Pie! I'm DEFINITELY gonna take his word for it. My friend Kat also mentioned the Key Lime and another dessert that I have never seen for sale in this neck of the woods.

Black & White Cookies

Kat is a connoisseur of deliciousness. I can thank her for introducing me to some of my favorite things. Biscoff cookies, EkMek from the Famous Bistro, Indian Samosas (really just great Indian food in general), and Black and White cookies. They're like a soft cake cookie with half vanilla, half chocolate icing. When you Google them, Publix is in the automated search suggestions.

Two Words, Pub Subs

The Italian, the Chicken Tender Sub which you can get tossed in buffalo sauce like the gal in this video, any deli meat, cheese, and unique topping and dressing combinations you can think of. Subway who? Apparently some of my friends don't even grocery shop at Publix, they just stop in for the sandwiches they're that good.

Delicious Deli

Along with the sub sandwiches, folks are fans of the fried chicken, sushi, build your own charcuterie, and party platters. The international and gourmet sections are favorites as well.

BOGO Sales!

We love a good coupon/mark down moment. While some say the prices of typical groceries are in the higher range at Publix, they do seem to have some good sales and buy one get one free options. They also apparently have a policy where if something is priced incorrectly, you get it for free! A friend of mine went to a Publix to buy a cooler that was marked for $49 but it rang up $79. Thanks so that policy, he snagged himself a free cooler

Allergy-Friendly Options

As mama to a former food allergy kid, this is HUGE. My gluten allergic/sensitive friends love Publix because there are plenty of safe options for them that some other big box stores don't have.

Company Culture

The fact that the plan is to employee 150 Daviess Countians is great.  My friends have also said that part of what they love about shopping there is that the people who work there seem happy. I honestly prefer to support companies I know are doing right by their employees. Customer Service is naturally always better as well. If anyone knows about that, it's my friend Rooster from Windy Hollow. She told me that Publix is still family-owned and also the largest employee-owned grocery store in the United States.

Finally, I'll leave you with my friend Greta's description. "It’s like the Disney World of groceries." If that's the case, I can't wait to shop there! I wonder if it's anything like this video.
