Saturday Night Live kicked off its 50th season on September 28th last year. This weekend, the perennial comedy sketch show is airing a 50th-anniversary celebration tomorrow night (2/16) and a big concert (which aired Friday night). They will air the very first SNL episode tonight (2/15).

The show was originally called NBC's Saturday Night and the first live episode aired on October 11th, 1975. This is the first sketch:

It's a fairly simple setup, a simple but hilarious joke, and according to Lorne Michaels, John Belushi didn't sign his contract, like he didn't sign it until right before he walked on stage. This moment and everything behind the scenes on the first night is depicted in Saturday Nighta movie that came out in October last year, on the 11th. The movie is good and by the way, it's now streaming on Netflix.

I keep wondering why is SNL counting this season as its 50th. Was the first season marked as zero, no it wasn't. It just so happens yours truly was born the Monday after the comedy series debuted. I was born on October 13th. Someone needs to call Sally O'Malley because I'm turning 50.

So wouldn't it make sense for the show to celebrate its 50th season this fall? I know most seasons of TV have 22 episodes. The average number of SNL episodes over all these years is about 20 because they take breaks usually on a holiday or the weekend of the Big Game.

And to top all this off, there has never been a cast member from Kentucky. Rude! Tennessee has produced two cast members. Current cast member James Austin Johnson is from Nashville. One of my favorites from the 90's seasons, Melanie Hutsell, is from Maryville.
