Kentucky’s Best Road Trips Take You to Caves, Bourbon, and Gorge-ous Views
I am not an authority on Kentucky road trips. If the position exists, though, I would happily apply. I love getting behind the wheel and exploring the Commonwealth. We did that last summer on a full vacation, and we do that throughout the year on smaller jaunts.
Among other things, this means that I'm glad it's not incumbent on me to select Kentucky's top three road trips. Kentucky Living has already covered that assignment with its annual "Best of Kentucky" awards, and I'm happy to share the report. Here they are, in no particular order.
The Red River Gorge Geological Area
Enjoy camping, ziplining, and the beauty of the Daniel Boone National Forest. But don't forget the beauty that lies BENEATH the trees:
And, by all means, your road trip HAS to include what is arguably the centerpiece of this particular getaway:
The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience
Bardstown is perfect for a fall Kentucky road trip. Loaded for bear with several bourbon distilleries, this historic city is home to the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience. Taste the product, enjoy the Five Brothers Bar & Restaurant, visit the many galleries, and check out the 1935 Distillery Theater. Then you won't wonder why this made the cut.
Mammoth Cave National Park
I can't imagine any tourism-themed list involving Kentucky not including Mammoth Cave National Park.
When you're sitting on one of the natural wonders of the world (some literally are), it has to be there. Go for the cave tours, but don't miss the visitors' center and a really cool museum.
